Jakob Sommers
Jakob Sommers started his performance journey when he was 11 and has been performing ever since. Along the way, he found a love for dance and began taking classes as a teenager. Jakob attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where he studied Musical Theater. While at SIU, he was a member of the Southern Illinois Dance Company. Jakob served not only as a dancer for the company; but also as a choreographer, teacher, and vice president for the governing board. During this time, he was also a teacher at Willow Street Studios and Arabesque Studios. Jakob gained experience working in both a recreational and competitive dance environment. He has been fortunate to attend various dance conventions, conferences, and masterclasses, learning from many people across different dance disciplines. Some of his favorites included taking classes from James Sutton of the New York Theatre Ballet, and Paige Cunningham Calderella of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.
Jakob has been a working professional since 2019 and has had the opportunity to work across the country, dancing in theaters, classrooms, and on film. He has worked in numerous theaters and amusement parks, dancing in not only musicals, but also ballets and various dance concerts. He has been in multiple productions here at Mountain Movers Theater Company. His favorite MOMO roles include: Shrek: The Musical (Shrek), Big Fish (Zacky), and Little Women (John Brooke). He has also assisted with MOMO’s summer theater camp, as well as choreographing MOMO’s production of Grease: School Version.
Jakob hopes to bring dance to Louisa in a way that gets the community excited to move. Dance is one of Jakob’s favorite forms of expression and athleticism because it combines physical activity with art and storytelling. Jakob hopes that with all of his classes, you leave having learned something new, sweat something out, and with a smile on your face.
